'Paradox of Movement' is a three-dimensional zoetrope, using 3d-printing, recycled wood, a motor, and Arduino circuit. Created for the graduation show of Cattrell's bachelor degree at London College of Communication, University of Arts London.
The installation looks into excessive behaviours related to the pressures of metropolitan living. These behaviours exist in never-ending cycles as does the zoetrope. On the bottom layer, the man on his phone is constantly chasing trends and external validation, leading to overconsumption and perpetual craving for more. The top layer represents rumination, by endlessly turning your problems over in your mind, they become amplified trapping you in a cycle of anxiety. One below is someone overworking themselves to exhaustion; pushing yourself to the point of burnout ends up reducing the prospect of achieving the productivity being aimed for. Below that is a girl leaning on her balcony, the only one that remains still and looking outward from her confined space. She gets to engage with the audience as they engage with her.
